I was wondering if anyone knew where to get Second Life Health Statistics.
For example, how many people use these islands for support groups, information gathering, etc.
Even just in the broad sense, for example anything relating to how many people are actively using the islands at any given time.
Really, i'm looking for any kind of information. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

In SL I own Dogland Dog Park, and I work with owners of Virtual Dogs. I just finished a project with a psychologist I met through the internet. The project was designed to systematically desensitize 13 subjects to their RL fear of dogs. All 13 became virtual dog owners, in SL. The project lasted 6 months, and had great success. out of the 13, 11 reported losing their fear of Canines. 7 out of the 13 became dog owners in real life. The project was so successful, I am being sent visitors with fear of dogs, by other professionals to work with.
I personally, have used this technique with myself and one friend. We both had a fear of heights. I can only speak for myself on my results. I am disabled, and walk with assistance, however after going through steps of higher and higher platforms, and allowing self to fall off these platforms, I found improvement in my fear. I was able to climb a ladder, and stand and walk on my roof, and work on my air conditioner.
Point here is, Virtual Worlds are well suited to use to eliminate some fears, through virtual exposure to same.

Go to this fellow or not, but know the risks involved. Systematic desensitization is a powerful therapeutic technique that is not learned over the course of sharing a project with an unnamed psychologist one meets through the Internet. A proper therapist has years of training, must demonstrate his or her skills, is licensed, and abides by a code of ethics. Before committing to any course of therapy, always check with the mental health care professional to find out his or her experience with problems such as yours, education and training, licenses held, and areas of specialization. Hi,
I am looking for some kind of instrument (survey, questionnaire, test) allowing me to access computer literacy for social media. There are many assessments for general computer literacy and the library community uses various instruments to assess information retrieval abilities and skills. However, I could not find anything which allows me to assess knowledge, awareness and familiarity of Web 2.0 Technologies.
Any suggestions are welcome!

Swine Flu Training Center Built in Second Life

The University of New Mexico has become the first institution to build a virtual training program for the H1N1 flu virus - commonly known as swine flu - and a strain which is expected to create global health problems again this fall.
The program, built in Second Life with a $6,000 grant from the Center for Disaster Medicine and debuted at the Second Life Community Convention, outpaced other efforts from more prestigious centers.
"MIT didn’t, Harvard didn’t, Stanford didn’t,” said Adel Saad, a systems administrator at the school who created the island, of the lack of a program from major academic institutions. “I mean, there were talks (about creating something virtually), but no one did creative training.”
The site was created for the Albuquerque-UNM Medical Reserve Corp, which assists in local response in an emergency or disaster. Coordinator Luke Esquibel said that in June about 300 people went through the island but that number jumped to 1,200 in July.
"A lot of the feedback that I’m getting is that a lot of the public likes this kind of technology because it’s reachable,” he said.
Saad expects to build the second phase of the sim by Thanksgiving, in which an avatar contracts the strain and trainees will have to put their training to the test.

It was nice to see this sort of thing in a well regarded publication. One of my former Informatics profs (who knows I'm involved with SL heathcare) sent me a link ... so if he's heard of it, word is getting out.
As the article says, and as I hope, we will start to see more research done on how well virtual worlds do with healthcare support and education. (Best practices would be great, too!)

Hi everyone, I would like to share you with you an opportunity for socially anxious adults in the United States to receive free online treatment for social anxiety:
Drexel University offers a free online treatment program for adults (ages 18-65) suffering from social anxiety disorder and living in the United States. This program is part of a research study examining the efficacy of a treatment for social anxiety delivered through an internet-based program called Second Life.
This cognitive-behavioral treatment consists of 12 weekly hour-long sessions with a therapist. You will be taught techniques to help cope with anxious thoughts and feelings. You will also have the opportunity to practice these techniques and improve your social skills. No medication is involved. If you enroll in this study, you will be asked to fill out several online questionnaires before, during, and after your treatment period.
