Something wonderful is happening and with one small action you can be part of it. Our friends in the Health Support Coalition have a chance to win 300,000 Lindens from the Annenberg School to create a SL home for a wide range of peer support groups.
"Ability Commons" is the work of Gentle Heron, Carolina Keats and many of the 41 members of the Health Support Coalition, including MDSLA, Crohn's and Colitis Support, Open Gates Peer Support, and Agoraphobia Support Group.
We need your help, right now. Please take 20 seconds to go to this website
http://tinyurl.com/4olwah
and vote for "Ability Commons." Rank the project "1) Favored" and do your part to help us create an incubator for small and emerging groups.
You will be asked to vote for your top three choices of five. Information on all five is here:
http://tinyurl.com/5c4vam
Your first choice vote for Ability Commons will allow more people with disabilities and health issues to share our pleasure and purposefulness in Second Life.
Will you do more? Please forward this note to your friends - voting is open until June 30, and your help will make all the difference.
Thank you!
Our proposal is here: http://secondlife.wikia.com/wiki/Ability_Commons
The Annenberg/USC site is here: http://tinyurl.com/5mawlm

I see the Ability Commons as a wonderful outreach to many people who live marginal lives due to disabilities. I voted for it, and I hope others did too. I would love to see a US sub group of SIM builders develop from this collective force, that could participate in US Government builds, as a top bidder with great resources. I work for the government, and I want them to use Abilitiy Commons builders to build a SIM for my government organization.

Joey & Linus Story - “Everyone pushes me around!”
Joey loves Linus. He brushes him and hugs him. He is learning to lead him into the arena. Linus stops. He does not respond to Joey. Then Linus decides to walk. He pulls Joey to the right, when Joey wants to go left. Joey cries out in his experience of powerlessness. He says, “Everyone pushes me around!” and talks about the bullies at school, and his parents at home. I ask if he would like to learn to lead a different horse, one that is less “pushy”. Joey says, “No I want to work it out with Linus."
Visit our Cause page to read the Joey & Linus story. We'll be posting stories that are illustrative of our work about monthly. We hope you enjoy them and understand the work a bit better.
Best,
Brad

The Network HQ now has all of its buildings in place and we're looking for HIV/AIDS related groups and parcels to partner with. So... If you are a member of a HIV/AIDS related group or parcel in Second Life and would like to join us to create a place where people can be directed to the various resources available in SL, or maybe you need meeting space or would like to put on an exhibition, head over to the HQ and drop me an IM. We also have a Gallery available for any artists out there.

Dear friends and community,
I just had to write to tell you that Topaz took blue ribbons in his first horse show, ever! He is of our therapy horses and has been training, since he needed a little something more in his life at Great Strides. Topaz, ridden by his trainer Jen, took blue ribbons in Training Level 1 and Training Level 3 tests and left the competition in the dust.
Congrats, Topaz!

Great Strides Stunned by 150% Insurance Increase Out of the Blue
Our insurance provider for Workman's Compensation, IWIF (Injured Workers Insurance Fund) a virtual monopoly in our area, recently stunned us with a bill for a $5,000 increase in our coverage - a 150% increase. This rude surprise came out of the blue and while we have appealed the decision on the facts and complete lack of reasonableness we had to pay upfront or be ruled out of compliance with employment laws.
This has blown a significant hole in our budget, late in the year, and may well impact our ability to serve clients if that gap is not closed. This is a 2 month appeal to all of our friends and supporters to help us fight this unreasonable rise in our rates. Your help will make sure that this rude surprise doesn't impact client services, horse care or other critical budget items while we work to fight this insurance Goliath.
Help the David in this fight - in this case Linus (an appaloosa pony and co-founder of the agency) and the herd - to show the big, bad insurance companies that they can't treat us like this and get away with it.
Strike a blow for fairness and health - please contribute now. The herd can't wait and you can make the critical difference. Please visit www.GreatStrides.org to donate now.
Thanks,

We are the face of SL Health...
New info poster up at Health Info Island currently featuring much of the materials from my travels. It is an attempt to help those new to SL discover some of the depth and breadth of health issues.
Notecards that are available at that location include: Healthcare Treatment Healthcare Libraries and Information Resources Healthcare Businesses General SL Health and Support Groups Healthcare Education Knoh's Healthcare Pro's Beginning Guide to SL
I've been working with the one-and-only Carolina Keats who coaxed me into getting this material up and the irrepressible Tam Hyun who did the graphics and build!
This sort of work is never done, but what we have now will at least get folks up to speed quicker than before.

Hi! I'm Ethan LeSabre, Manager of the SL AIDS Memorial Garden in Tethea
There are a number of groups, organisations, and places dedicated to the HIV/AIDS Support and Education cause and I want to try to gather all this fantastic work together in one place. To this end I've created a web forum to start the ball rolling. I hope that, once people start signing up for it it'll be an ideal central portal for people to get information on the various resources available around Second Life.
The Second Life AIDS Memorial web forum can be found at: http://slaidsmemorial.lefora.com/forum
So, how can you help? Well, I would like you to pass this notecard out to anyone who you think would be prepared to help with content for the forum, such as moderators, content providers and the like. If you run a group or place for people and would like your own section in the forum then please get in touch with me too. For those of you who don't know, my email address is efan78@aol.com, and the SL AIDS Memorial Garden website can be found at http://sl-aids-memorial.tripod.com I hope that you'll feel able to help in some way, and that we'll be able to gather together all the fantastic work that has been done, and is being done here in Second Life.
Thanks for your time Ethan

5 May 2008 A final project report issued today from the Alliance Library System marks the latest chapter in an exciting experiment funded by the Greater Midwest Region of the National Library of Medicine (GMR/NNLM). The project, entitled "Providing Consumer Health Outreach and Library Programs to Virtual World Residents in Second Life" provided outreach to virtual medical communities, health training and information for residents of Second Life, links to consumer health resources, one-on-one support to residents, and part-time staffing for HealthInfo Island.
The project is available at : http://www.alliancelibrarysystem.com/pdf08/healthinfoislandfinalreport08.pdf Carol Perryman, a doctoral student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an experienced medical and consumer health librarian, coordinated the project. She stated, " Participation in such an environment challenges the creative imagination. What is a library collection in a place where proprietary resources are out of the question? We feel collaboration is part of the answer." "We are thrilled to have been part of this exciting and ground-breaking new project and providing quality health information to residents of Second Life," said Kitty Pope, Executive Director of the Alliance Library System. "Virtual worlds hold great promise for people with chronic health conditions and for people seeking information on health." Working with Perryman on the project was Guus van den Brekel, Coordinator of Electronic Services, Central Medical Library, University Medical Center, Groningen. Tom Peters, CEO of TAP Information Services, evaluated the project and authored the final report.

Has anyone else been to the Dreams Fair yet? It's been a wonderful thing to see so many health related groups in SL meeting and sharing information with the larger community. Share some of your experiences!
Our group had one of our meetings at the fair last weekend, and it was a delightful experience. Just great to exchange ideas and perspectives with the SL community.
