VIRTUAL ABILITY ISLAND GRAND OPENING!

Join us on Saturday, August 16th at 1 PM SLT to celebrate the Grand Opening of Virtual Ability Island.
The island was developed with a new resident orientation center, advanced tutorials, and training facilities for individuals with disabilities or chronic health conditions. The entire island is accessibility-friendly for new and experienced residents and will provide ongoing classes for people who want to search for and evaluate health information. Funding came through an initial grant from the National Library of Medicine to theAlliance Library Systemand is sustained by the generosity of individual contributors to Virtual Ability, Inc. We are excited to present this important resource to members of the Second Life community!

Second Life Calling medical librarians (or 'just' library folks)!

Place: Healthinfo Island
Dates: Tuesday, August 5 OR Wednesday August 6
Time: 3:30 p.m. Second Life (Pacific) time, for both days.

If you cannot attend, please do let me know you're interested anyway.
I have included, below, the original call for collaboration in case you never saw it.

Here's the agenda:

1. Workshop/class planning
2. Volunteering at HealthInfo Island
3. Health librarian group

All the best,
Carolina Keats

Original announcement:

Hello, all -
Have you been hoping to find a well-defined project in Second Life? Are you interested in collaborating to create health-related workshops? I'm looking for a few good librarians (really, you don't have to be medical librarians or even 'official' librarians in order to get involved).

*First*, I'm beginning to put together a sequence of classes/workshops to be held on the new Virtual Ability Island. Topics will be: searching using Google, MedlinePlus, special focus health information, PubMed, evaluating information (health literacy, specifically, but broadly, evaluation of resources), and - whatever else. I have classes I've developed already, but now we have the ability to have inworld browsers, and I'd love to see how we can exploit that for patron education.

Virtual Ability Island, the sim for orientation and training for people with disabilities and chronic diseases, is on its way - so new the plywood's still raw. Plans for teaching there are that we'll have a class at least every other week, and it'd be just great to get some planning done as a collaboration effort, with others who share these interests. Let's use this as an opportunity to explore *what works* in a virtual community, for adult education: the focus is on interactivity, hands-on exploration. It is, from my prior experiences on Healthinfo Island, a worthy challenge for your marketing, planning, technology, evaluation, and other skills. If you're interested, please let me know!

*Second,* I am thinking it's well past time we had some kind of regular coverage on Healthinfo Island. I could use some help! If you're interested in spending an hour or more (your choice of time) telling people about the project, doing health reference, giving tours - let's talk. We have a lot going on and would - truly - love your involvement. Note: although I'd love to get some medical librarians involved, you do *not* have to be a medical librarian for this. If you run into questions - referral's the plan. I'm usually at the end of an email!
