Hello, I'm Poppy Zabelin. I joined Second Life in April 2007 and almost immediately took on the leadership of Second Life's Cancer Survivors group, with the mission to make the group more visible in SL, to grow the group, and develop it into a peer support network. We now have over 280 members, a program of regular peer support meetings, survivor-led "fighting spirit" talks, and talks from invited speakers inside and outside SL. I'm co-founder of our sister group SL's Cancer Caregivers. Both groups are affiliated with the American Cancer Society in Second Life, and our members have the honor of walking the Opening Lap of Relay For Life of Second Life. I'm also on the Planning Committee for RFL of SL. In 2009 I chaired the international relations committee, and for 2009-2010 I am PR chair, responsible for PR/Communications including publicity, outreach/mission, and international relations. In Real Life, I'm a thyroid cancer survivor, and I used to work as a book publisher for a large multi-national scientific and medical (STM) publishing company based in The Netherlands, which involved frequent travel. I write and edit patient education materials and edit a quarterly magazine for a health charity in the UK of which I am also a trustee.
